Kathmandu. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has announced that the seventh World Protected and Conserved Areas Congress will be held in Panama in 2027. The announcement was made during the ongoing IUCN conference in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
This high-level event, which helps set the course for global conservation, is expected to showcase Panama’s leadership in biodiversity and environmental protection. According to IUCN, the Congress is scheduled for September 2027, and it will be the first time the event is held in the Mesoamerica region. The previous edition took place in Sydney, Australia in 2014.
Panama’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Juan Carlos Navarro, said the Congress will offer an opportunity to present the country’s national parks and conservation efforts to the world. IUCN Director General Dr. Grethel Aguilar called Panama one of the world’s most biodiverse nations, and expected the Congress to catalyze effective action for climate, biodiversity, and human welfare.
The 2027 Congress will focus discussions on global change and biodiversity, scaling effective conservation, and the relationship between conservation and communities. IUCN believes the event will inspire nations to implement biodiversity strategies and strengthen the role of local communities in conservation.
